How to Clean Mould Off Walls in Bathrooms

Mould is a common problem in bathrooms, where moisture and humidity create ideal conditions for it to grow. But don't worry; cleaning mould off walls is relatively easy and can be done with common household items. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get rid of mould and keep your bathroom clean and healthy:

1. Safety First

Before you start, put on gloves and a face mask to protect yourself from mould spores. Open windows or use a fan to ventilate the bathroom.

2. Identify the Type of Mould

Not all moulds are the same, and some may require different cleaning methods. However, most bathroom moulds are black mould, which can be cleaned with common household cleaners.

3. Remove Loose Mould

Using a scrub brush, gently brush away loose mould spores. Avoid spreading the mould by scrubbing too hard.

4. Create a Cleaning Solution

Mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Alternatively, you can use a commercial bathroom cleaner that contains bleach or hydrogen peroxide.

5. Apply the Solution

Spray the cleaning solution onto the mouldy area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. This will give the solution time to kill the mould spores.

6. Scrub the Area

Use a scrub brush to gently scrub the mouldy area. Be careful not to damage the wall surface.

7. Rinse and Dry

Rinse the area thoroughly with clean water and dry it with a clean cloth. Ensure the area is completely dry to prevent mould from returning.

8. Prevention

To prevent mould from returning, keep your bathroom well-ventilated by opening windows or using a fan. Additionally, use a dehumidifier to reduce humidity levels. Clean your bathroom regularly, especially in areas prone to moisture.

Additional Tips:
  • If the mould has penetrated deeply into the wall, you may need to hire a professional mould remediation specialist.
  • For stubborn mould, you can use a stronger cleaning solution, such as 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water.
  • Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners, as they can release harmful fumes when mixed with bleach.
  • Always test the cleaning solution on a small area first to ensure it does not damage the wall surface.
  • If you have any health concerns or allergies, consult a doctor before cleaning mould.
