How to Make Large Wall Decals With Cricut: A Comprehensive Guide

Transform your blank walls into stunning canvases with custom wall decals created using your Cricut machine. These decals add a personal touch to any room, whether it's a whimsical design for a child's bedroom or an elegant pattern for a living room. Follow this comprehensive guide to learn the essential steps of making large wall decals with your Cricut.

Choose Your Design

The first step is to select a design for your wall decal. You can find countless options online, or you can create your own using a graphics editing software program like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape. Keep in mind that your design should be vector-based, which allows for scalability without losing quality.

Prepare Your Materials

Gather the necessary materials for your project:

  • Cricut machine
  • Cricut cutting mat
  • Vinyl in your desired color(s)
  • Transfer tape
  • Scraper
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Masking tape (optional)

Prepare Your Cricut Machine

Set up your Cricut machine according to the manufacturer's instructions. Connect it to your computer using the provided USB cable or via Bluetooth. Open the Cricut Design Space software on your computer.

Import or Create Your Design

Import your design file into Cricut Design Space or create a new design from scratch. Make sure your design is sized appropriately for your wall. If needed, adjust the size by selecting the design and dragging the corners of the bounding box.

Choose Your Vinyl

Select the appropriate vinyl for your project. There are various types of vinyl available, such as permanent, removable, and wall-friendly vinyl. Choose a vinyl that is suitable for your intended application and surface.

Cut Your Design

Place your vinyl on the Cricut cutting mat, ensuring that it is flat and wrinkle-free. Use the roller provided with your Cricut machine to press down on the vinyl and secure it in place. Select the appropriate cut settings for your chosen vinyl and click "Cut." The Cricut machine will cut your design according to the specified settings.

Weed Your Design

Once the cutting is complete, remove the excess vinyl from around your design. This process is called weeding. Use a weeding tool or tweezers to carefully peel away the unwanted vinyl, leaving only the design elements intact.

Apply Transfer Tape

Cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than your design. Carefully peel off the backing of the transfer tape and apply it to the front of your design. Use a scraper to smooth out the transfer tape and remove any air bubbles.

Transfer Your Design to the Wall

Position your design on the desired wall location. Use a level to ensure it is straight. Carefully remove the backing of the transfer tape, starting from one corner. As you peel away the backing, press down on the design with your scraper to transfer it to the wall.

Remove the Transfer Tape

Once the entire design is transferred to the wall, carefully peel away the transfer tape. Start from one corner and slowly work your way across the design. Be patient and take your time to avoid damaging the decal.

Your custom wall decal is now complete! Admire your creation and enjoy your newly transformed space.
