How to Craft an Elegant Wall Mounted Drop Leaf Table
A wall mounted drop leaf table is a versatile and space-saving solution for any home. Its ability to fold up and out of the way makes it ideal for small spaces or rooms that need to serve multiple functions. Crafting your own wall mounted drop leaf table is a rewarding project that can add both style and functionality to your space.
Materials You'll Need:
- 1x12 pine boards (or similar hardwood)
- 1/2-inch plywood
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Clamps
- Wall mounting brackets
- Drill
- Saw
- Sandpaper
- Stain or paint (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Cut the Boards:
Cut two 1x12 pine boards to the desired length of your table. These boards will form the top and bottom of the table. Cut two additional 1x12 pine boards to the desired height of your table, minus the thickness of the top and bottom boards. These boards will form the legs.
2. Assemble the Frame:
Apply wood glue to the edges of the leg boards and clamp them together to form a rectangle. Secure the joints with wood screws. Repeat this process to assemble the top and bottom boards.
3. Attach the Legs to the Top and Bottom:
Apply wood glue to the inside corners of the leg assembly and align it with the inside corners of the top and bottom boards. Clamp the pieces together and secure them with wood screws.
4. Cut and Attach the Drop Leaf:
Cut a piece of 1/2-inch plywood to fit the width of the table and approximately half the length. This will be the drop leaf. Apply wood glue to the edge of the drop leaf that will be attached to the table and align it with the edge of the table. Clamp it in place and secure it with wood screws.
5. Install the Wall Mounting Brackets:
Determine the desired height and location of the table on the wall. Install the wall mounting brackets at the appropriate height and distance apart to support the table. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation.
6. Attach the Table to the Brackets:
Lift the table into place and align it with the wall mounting brackets. Secure the table to the brackets using the provided hardware.
7. Sand and Finish:
Sand any rough edges or imperfections on the table. If desired, apply stain or paint to the table to match your décor. Allow it to dry completely before using.
Tips for Success:
- Use high-quality hardwood for durability.
- Pre-drill holes before inserting screws to prevent splitting.
- Ensure the drop leaf is perfectly aligned to fit snugly against the table when folded up.
- Reinforce the joints with metal brackets if desired for added strength.
- Customize the table to suit your specific needs, such as adding drawers or a shelf underneath.
