2. Apply joint compound. Use a putty knife to apply a thin layer of joint compound to the hole. Be sure to fill the hole completely, but do not overfill it. Allow the joint compound to dry completely.

3. Sand the joint compound. Once the joint compound is dry, use sandpaper to sand it smooth. Be sure to sand only the joint compound, not the surrounding drywall. Sand until the joint compound is flush with the surrounding drywall.

5. Clean the area. Once the hole is filled and sanded, use a damp sponge to clean the area. Allow the area to dry completely.

Your hole is now filled and ready to be painted or wallpapered. If you are not planning to paint or wallpaper the area, you can leave it as is. However, if you want a seamless finish, you should paint or wallpaper the area to match the surrounding wall.
